Declines in sales, but also an opportunity for digitalisation: The factory software provider Actyx has conducted a survey to determine what effects the corona crisis could have.
The Munich factory software start-up Actyx has asked industry experts how the corona virus will affect the German industry. More than 50 percent of the 37 survey participants expect a significant slump in their sales due to the coronavirus within the next three months. A third of those surveyed even expect significant declines in 12 to 24 months. However, many experts also see the crisis as an opportunity for companies, especially with regard to digitization.
This is because more than half of the experts surveyed also expect a significant acceleration of digitization and automation in the industry within the next 12 to 24 months. In open answers, the experts not only mentioned the automation of administrative processes or the digitalization of business meetings. A large proportion of them assume that there will be increased investment in the digitalisation and automation of production facilities. This is also necessary: "In many companies in Germany, the issue of digitisation has reached the administrative sector. In production, on the other hand, a lot of things still run analog," says Maximilian Fischer, one of the founders of Actyx. In order to be able to react more flexibly to crises in the future, we need industries that are capable of change. "Factories should therefore now take the step towards digitalisation," says Fischer.
Another trend expected by the experts surveyed is the increase in 're-shoring' - bringing core production back to Germany and Europe. Actyx founder Fischer explains: "The Corona crisis has exposed the risks of global supply chains for many. In order to be protected from scenarios like these in the future, many companies are therefore considering bringing part of their production back to Europe. In order to be able to competitively rebuild or expand production in high-wage countries, automation and digitalization will undoubtedly gain in relevance.
